🐇 Report: Rabbit Rearing Project Takes Off

Recently, the boys completed building cages designed to house the furry animals, and the first stock has already arrived: two males and three females —rabbits have officially hopped into the program.

The Mission:

Over the next six months, the team expects the rabbits to reproduce, gradually increasing their numbers. The goal is twofold.

On one hand, the boys are learning practical skills—feeding, cleaning, and caring for animals.

On the other, it adds something new to the menu: fresh, healthy meat right from the center. And who knows? Once the numbers multiply, there may even be extra to sell.

Across Kenya, rabbit farming is reputable as a low-cost, fast-growing option for families and small enterprises. Hybrid breeds, in particular, are valued for their quick maturity and high reproduction rates. While commercial sales are not the primary target here, the door remains open: once the numbers grow, some of the stock could be sold to support other needs at the center.

Rabbits also come with side perks and their benefits extend beyond meat. Their skins can be used in different ways, their manure is a natural fertilizer (organic manure), and believe it or not—their urine doubles as a foliar spray and even keeps pests away (a natural pest repellent). Talk about an animal that gives more than it takes!

This means the project has the potential to touch different aspects of daily life, from food to farming.

Because he knew there was something fishy about it!
